The transport industry is changing rapidly, with Big Data contributing to the development of faster, better and more efficient transport systems than ever before. Representing a consortium of 48 leading transport, logistics and information technology stakeholders in Europe, the TransformingTransport project showcased a host of solutions and paradigm shifts in the transport industry at the Transport Research Arena 2018, aptly organised under the title of ‘A digital Era for Transport’ and held from 16-19 April in Vienna.

From airport turnaround time to connected vehicles to real-time rail maintenance and intelligent port hubs, TransformingTransport revealed the results of the 13 pilot projects that it is currently conducting to participants, policy makers and other transport stakeholders. Key TransportingTransport outcomes at the event include three full papers.  The overall ambitions and key innovations of TransformingTransport were presented on the podium session on Day 1. Two more presentations are related to the pilots and the methodology.

Two specific pilot projects involving the manipulation of Big Data to streamline transport were showcased at the TransformingTransport booth. The Smart Passenger Flow Pilot revealed how the number of passengers arriving to security area can be predicted and highlighted accuracy against real figures. In parallel, the Ausol Load Balancing Pilot on connected vehicles showed how its new dashboard, in the form of an online application, can manage all aspects of a fleet of cars that are connected together in high-tech ways.
